The Story Of "Just Waiting"
"A special dream... a secret, hoped for wish... that is the essence and wonder of childhood."
Judy Newcomb, a popular national Watercolorist known for her exquisite realist work of Richmond scenes and paintings depicting the innocence of children, is donating the proceeds from the sales of a Limited Edition watercolor print to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This painting has a special meaning to the artist. In 1992, all of her original watercolors and other framed prints that she had worked on for years were on board a large truck awaiting delivery to a show for the next day. During the night, vandals broke into the truck and set it on fire, destroying everything. However, while sifting through the debris, she discovered one original painting that had miraculously survived -- "Just Waiting." Judy felt there was some special reason this painting survived the intense heat. As a result the original was made into Limited Edition prints where all proceeds from the sales would go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The watercolor, entitled "Just Waiting," is of a little girl in a sundress, large straw hat, clutching a cuddly teddy bear. The child is inside a beach house peering out through the glass doors over the deck and out into the rolling flow of the ocean. This picture captures the hopes and dreams of those children who are afflicted with a life-threatening illness. The Make-A-Wish goal is to provide memories of joy and laughter which differ dramatically from the environment of hospitals and treatment centers. It is the artist's hope that this picture not only brings enjoyment to the viewers, but also serves to remind us that children enter this world full of innocence, but yet so vulnerable to life-threatening illnesses. We can provide love, support, prayer and medical attention while the child "Just Waits." There were only 500 prints made, each selling for $50.00. To date over $16,000 has been raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Prints are available through the Judy Newcomb Gallery, or the internet. For more information, please call (804) 794-6001.
